What do we choose to hold close — and push away?

This project began on the streets of Union Square, NYC. Passersby were invited to write something they like inside a heart, and something they dislike outside it, using red and black pens.

Rather than asking people to define their emotions, the project collects what their feelings are attached to — people, objects, memories, or ideas.
Each response reveals a personal relationship with the world.

Handwritten by strangers and organized through a graphic system, these marks form a shared visual language of individual subjectivity. More than a performance or a poster, Heartbeat explores how private preferences become public visuals, and how design can give form to human empathy.

우리는 무엇을 마음 가까이에 두고, 무엇을 밀어내며 살아갈까요?

이 프로젝트는 뉴욕 유니온 스퀘어 거리에서 시작되었습니다. 지나가는 사람들에게 빨간 펜과 검은 펜으로 좋아하는 것은 심장 안에, 싫어하는 것은 심장 밖에 적어달라고 요청했습니다.

이 작업은 감정을 직접적으로 정의하기보다는, 각자의 마음이 어디에 닿아 있는지를 수집하는 데 초점을 둡니다. 사람, 물건, 기억, 혹은 막연한 생각까지 — 짧은 단어와 문장 하나하나에는 개인이 세상과 맺고 있는 관계가 자연스럽게 드러납니다.

낯선 이들의 손글씨는 하나의 그래픽 시스템 안에서 정리되며, 개인의 주관적인 선택들은 공유 가능한 시각 언어로 변환됩니다. 퍼포먼스나 포스터를 넘어, Heartbeat는 사적인 취향과 관계가 어떻게 공적인 이미지가 될 수 있는지, 그리고 디자인이 공감에 형태를 부여하는 방식에 대해 질문합니다.

The Heartbeat logo is a collage typography created by assembling letters taken from participants’ handwritten texts. Different handwriting styles come together to form a single name, reflecting the collective nature of the project.

Heartbeat 로고는 참여자들이 직접 쓴 손글씨에서 알파벳을 골라 조합해 만든 콜라주 형태의 타이포그래피입니다. 서로 다른 필체가 하나의 이름을 이루며, 이 프로젝트가 개인들의 참여로 완성되었음을 보여줍니다.
